How Businesses Are Recruiting with Low Unemployment Rates

With unemployment rates at record lows, it is hard for many companies to find employees to fill open positions. This puts job seekers in a good position to make deals and forces companies to try new recruiting methods. According to the 2018 Recruiter Nation Survey by Jobvite, 74 percent of recruiters thinking hiring is going to become more competitive for employers in 2019. If you are looking for a job this year, Austin Nichols has some advice for some trends to which you should pay attention.

1.     Focus on Company Reputation

While companies are promoting their open jobs, potential employees are going to start looking into reputations. Websites like Glassdoor are going to be visited more frequently to make sure that companies are living up to the standards of employees. Reviews on these types of websites can give job seekers insider knowledge about what it is really like to work for a certain company. If you don’t already look at employer reviews, it might be a good idea to start doing so.

2.     Social Media May Be an Important Tool for Recruiters

While LinkedIn has been used for years to help companies connect with potential employees, some companies may start looking for new talent on other social media sites like Facebook and Instagram. Part of the shift appears to be due to the fact that people tend to be more active on Facebook and Instagram than they are on LinkedIn. Many people create a LinkedIn account and then forget about them for long periods of time. As a potential employee, it is a good idea to make sure that your social media accounts are linked to your LinkedIn page or personal website or portfolio.

3.     Recruiters Are Less Picky About Certain Skills

Since fewer candidates are applying for jobs, employers can’t be as picky about potential new hires as they used to be. Now, companies are prioritizing different skills. To some, a candidate’s communication skills and enthusiasm are much less important. To others, organizations have become less concerned about previous work experience and industry knowledge.

As a potential candidate, you should carefully read all job postings and review any terminology, technology, and skills that are mentioned directly in the job description. You can also come prepared with questions for the interviewer about company culture and anything else you may be curious about that you couldn’t determine via the job posting. And you should go into the interview that shows that you are interested in both the company and the position, which could land you the job.

4.     Recruiting Is Going to Be Like Marketing

Promoting open jobs and the company itself is going to be a crucial piece of the puzzle for many companies in this current job market. One of the best ways to gain attention from potential recruits is to promote the culture, benefits, and perks of working for a certain company. To do this, many companies are promoting the company culture on their websites and social media profiles.

In this tough recruiting market, companies have to adjust. For potential employees, the tough hiring environment can provide a unique hiring experience. While the hiring process will probably be easier for qualified candidates, that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t do anything in your power to stick out as the best candidate for the job. Your hard work and ambition will likely be recognized immediately, and it could land you the job and give you a leg up during salary and benefit negotiations.
