As the economy continues to trend upward, employment outlook and pay rates follow suit. The job market for engineers is at its highest point since 2007, which means that there are more jobs for everyone in the field. Austin Nichols Technical Search is ready to help engineers find their next job.

Recent college graduate hires are up in the engineering field. In fact, 26 percent of firms stated that they would be looking for college graduates, and half of these companies say that they will offer a starting pay of at least $50,000, compared to only 27 percent last year.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that engineering jobs will increase by three percent over the next seven years as a whole, but some of these fields are expected to grow more rapidly than others.

The most in-demand jobs for new graduates include business, engineering, computer and information sciences, engineering technologies, and communications technologies. In fact, engineering is second highest on the list with 26 percent of employers hiring recent college graduates in the field, and engineering technologies majors are highly desired by 16 percent of employers.

Salaries are up across the industry. Those in the mechanical engineering profession are the most likely to see an increase in pay, while those in aerospace engineering are the least likely. The high demand for engineering jobs is making it easier for both experienced and new engineers to find a position that they will enjoy and get the paycheck that they desire. Three of every five employers have stated that they will offer positions to students before they graduate from college with degrees. Expected salaries for recent college graduates breaks down as such:

  • Under $30,000: 23 percent
  • $30,000 to less than $40,000: 21 percent
  • $40,000 to less than $50,000: 18 percent
  • $50,000 and higher: 39 percent

Plus, a majority of these employers, 70 percent to be exact, are willing to negotiate salary offers with recent college graduates. The median annual wage for engineering jobs is $77,900, while the median annual wage for all other occupations is $37,040.

Employment in fields such as aerospace engineering and biomedical engineering is expected to increase by a couple thousand by 2026, but fields such as electrical engineering, industrial engineering, and mechanical engineering are expected to increase by several thousand by 2026. Many of these fields are suffering due to older employees retiring and not enough college graduates filling their spaces in the workforce, which is why these college graduates are in such high demand.
